MATTHEW JARED LEE

About Me:

- Originally hailing from Bolivar Missouri, I received my B.S.Ed in Speech and Theatre Education at Missouri State University, while finishing my degree I had the opportunity to open my first theatre. This was Springfield 2nd Stage, a 200 seat black-box performance space. This became a one-of-a-kind learning experience and playground. After almost two years of working and managing this space while finishing up my degree, I decided to uproot and chance moving to somewhere else to see what could happen. I picked Portland. While in Portland I created my new theatre company The Factory Theatre. Also during this tenure in Portland I continued my education and received an M.F.A. in Directing from University of Portland, all the while having the privilege to work alongside some amazing artists and companies.

- I aspire in my work to capture elements that theatre does better than any other art form. While story is the driver in any piece of performance, I want to tell the story in a way that only theatre is capable. I look for opportunities to remind the audience and myself that theatre is an event to be witnessed. It’s an event that we are all participants. It attacks our senses; it moves us instinctually, intellectually, and emotionally. I want to explore in my work the space between the action on stage and the spectators in the seats. I want to push what is possible in this space. What we see during a performance could not have happened without us there and will never happen again. It’s more than the fact that it is a live performance, it’s the fact that we have all gathered, audience and performers together to bear witness.
